How to clean the armature commutator
Use A toothbrush and contact cleaner to clean the commutator. Spray the contact cleaner on the commutator and then use a toothbrush to stir the surface. This removes all grease, dust, dirt or any other contaminants that may cause the connection problem and prevents any contamination from spreading in the next step of cleaning the copper surface. Flush the rest of the armature with a contact cleaner to remove all unwanted dirt or debris. Use only electronic contact with the cleaner, or you may damage the insulation inside the armature. Next, we will re-install the surface of the commutator to remove any pitting, arcing marks, embedded dirt, etc. . Using only 600 mesh size alumina sandpaper, tear off a piece about the width of the commutator. Hold the armature in one hand, wrap the sandpaper around the commutator, and press gently to make the commutator spin completely, not just back and forth. Not all armatures are of the same size, so using a drill bit can be problematic because some chucks can not be opened large enough. Prepare a piece of sandpaper that is wide enough and long enough to move the commutator several inches away. This allows for a fairly uniform grinding, similar to using a lathe. Make sure to remove any surface defects. Any depth of damage to sandpaper is likely to be too large, so you'll need someone to re-cut the surface on the lathe. The commutator is then cleaned with a contact cleaner and the distance between each rod is cleaned with a plastic scriber to remove any debris that may have arisen before or after the resurfacing. The next step is to check the MICA depth between each bar. For this armature, it is not necessary, but in some cases the MICA between the strips may be too high to allow the brush to be properly mounted on the commutator. Mica should be about 1 mm lower than the Strip, which is also known as MICA undercutting. To cut back MICA, use the special tools of this tool, such as a cutting blade, a file, or a razor.
